Beyond the Xinjiang grand loop, the White Cloud Express also runs a Southwest Yunnan line - a winter route that threads Guangxi, Yunnan and the Tibetan edge of Shangri-La, onboard the same private-en-suite fleet.
The Southwest Yunnan line boards at Guangzhou Baiyun Station, one of the largest integrated rail hubs in Asia, where high-speed, intercity and metro lines meet under a single roof. For anyone arriving from Hong Kong, Macau or Southeast Asia that means one station and one transfer rather than a cross-city taxi. It is also the only station in Guangzhou that now dispatches tourist charter trains. From there the train turns south and west: Guangzhou - Chongzuo - Kunming - Baoshan - Tengchong - Lijiang - Shangri-La - and back to Guangzhou, a warm-weather counterpoint to the Xinjiang editions.
Every cabin carries a private en-suite bathroom and converts between twin and double. Two package tiers are offered - a four-package and a three-package option (the latter a lightly upgraded accommodation plan) - so the same train suits both first-timers and repeat travellers.
The train is built on 25K-type stock rather than the older 25G bodies several other Chinese luxury trains were rebuilt from, with air-spring suspension and a 7 mm coupling gap that keeps the ride quiet enough to sleep through. Eighteen carriages carry 92 guests in 46 rooms: twelve sleeping cars with private bathrooms, of which two are three-cabin cars and ten are four-cabin cars, plus a kitchen car, a restaurant car, the reception lobby, an observation car, a generator car and a crew dormitory.
The dining cars carry the train's Cantonese backbone south into Yunnan: cross-bridge rice noodles, Yunnan mushrooms, Tengchong hot pots and Tibetan-influenced dishes as the train climbs toward Shangri-La. Premium drinks are included.
A lounge and sightseeing areas carry the evening, with regional cultural programming. The train carries Wi-Fi, and the route is paced for day excursions with the train repositioning overnight.
Each car has its own attendant, and service runs at roughly one crew member for every two guests. Comprehensive travel insurance is included, up to RMB 800,000 of cover, reduced by law for guests over 75. The train was specified around older travellers: non-slip flooring throughout, an emergency call system in every cabin, wide step-free corridors, sound-insulated sleeping cars, and menus planned around nutrition as well as flavour. A medical officer travels with every departure. Travellers over 70 need a medical report issued within the previous six months plus a signed health acknowledgement, and those over 75 travel with a family member. Sealed gangways and close-coupled coaches keep the ride quiet on the long hauls between Guangxi and Yunnan.
