Life onboard China's luxury trains.

1. Boarding

Luxury trains in China are not sold as individual tickets on 12306. Each journey is a full package, suite, dining, excursions, transfers, arranged through an authorized travel agency and sealed with a national e-contract. Book early: peak-season departures between June and October sell out months ahead.

Boarding itself is a ceremony, not a queue. The Silk Road Express has a dedicated hotel-style boarding lobby where a butler team greets you with a welcome drink at the door. The Panda Express Jinxiu Tianfu has a double-door welcome car, one side a Song-dynasty tea room, the other a modern water bar, with a folk song-and-dance welcome at the station. The New Orient Express meets you with an all-day arrival service in Urumqi and a dedicated luggage porter.

• Luggage: porters handle the large cases. Between stops you carry only a small overnight bag; your suite stores the rest for the whole journey.
• Check-in: your butler walks you to your suite, explains the call system, and confirms any dietary notes.
• Boarding points: Silk Road Express, Kashgar, Xining or Guangzhou depending on route; New Orient Express, Urumqi; Panda Express, Chengdu with Lanzhou, Xining and Kashgar as joining points.

2. Life onboard

Suites built larger than you expect

Every suite in the fleet has a private en-suite bathroom, a feature the classic European Orient Express cabins largely lack. On the Silk Road Express, 38 suites span 11 to 22 m², each with a 270-degree panoramic window. The two Jinxiu Weiyang suites occupy an entire car each, with a super-large bathroom and a bathtub set against the window: the crew draws a hot bath while the desert or the snow line slides past, the on-board ritual the operator calls bathing by the window. The New Orient Express runs three gold-diamond tiers, Supreme, Xi Yue and Bo Yue, all en-suite, with panoramic windows enlarged by 30-40% on the third-generation cars. Panda Express rooms are smart, quiet doubles of 10-13 m² with a dry-wet separated bathroom.

Beds are firm Chinese-hotel standard, dressed in high-thread-count linen with nightly turndown. The amenity trays are genuinely premium: Dyson hair dryers, BVLGARI and Aesop toiletries, Marvis toothpaste and Serta bedding on the Silk Road Express. Just ask if you prefer a softer mattress; a topper can be arranged.

Dining: a moving banquet

Meals are cooked fresh in the galley, not reheated. Menus rotate as the landscape changes and rarely repeat over a long journey. The Silk Road Express runs two dining cars, a Western car and a Chinese car, serving Michelin-grade courses on century-old British silver and Jingdezhen porcelain. The New Orient Express dining car seats 60 and cycles through more than a hundred regional dishes, with low-oil, low-salt options for older guests and children. Panda Express pairs Sichuan flavours with the region you are crossing.

Breakfast offers both Western and Chinese choices; dinner is the multi-course centrepiece, often themed to the province outside the window. Premium drinks are included, and dietary requirements, vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, are accommodated with advance notice.

Service: attentive, never intrusive

Every car has its own attendant, and a butler team works around the clock. On the Silk Road Express, five holiday ambassadors and two photographers travel with you, and each suite receives one complimentary laundry service. The New Orient Express keeps a medical officer on board with first-aid kits and wheelchairs; its crew are trained in Red Cross first response. Panda Express fields dual guides, a butler and a porter, plus medical staff throughout.

3. Entertainment

Long journeys pass quickly because the train itself is the venue. Each train carries a dedicated observation or entertainment car designed for the landscape.

• Silk Road Express: the Xingxiang Palace lounge car offers a 270-degree view, a piano and afternoon tea, while the Han Yuefu car layers in a KTV room, a tea room, an automatic mahjong table and a cigar bar. Each suite includes a free hour of KTV and a free hour of mahjong, reserve in advance.
• New Orient Express: a bar car with coffee, a piano and KTV, plus an entertainment car with a mini stage, game tables and regular folk performances and intangible-heritage craft sessions.
• Panda Express: the Jinji entertainment car combines a tea bar, KTV, a mahjong and chess room, an observation lounge and hands-on Shu embroidery and bamboo weaving. The welcome car runs tea tastings on one side and a cocktail bar on the other.

The Silk Road Express also doubles as a gallery. Its red-and-gold livery was hand-drawn by a Tsinghua Academy of Arts design team around Han-dynasty cloud-chariot motifs, with auspicious beasts, cloud scrolls and bird-beast totems running the length of the train. Inside, original artworks continue the theme: a lacquer panel, Golden Sand Camel Dream, recreating the commerce of the Han-era Silk Road, and a bronze horse head, Ma Shou Xiang Jin Wei, modelled on a Han jade original. Between stations the train reads less like transport than a slow-moving exhibition.

Evenings tend toward relaxed sociability. The dress code is smart casual for dinner; many guests change, many do not. The mood is closer to a private club than a gala.

4. Notes and care

• Packing: layers. The Duku Highway crosses four seasons in a day, and stops such as Tashkurgan sit near 3,000 metres. Carry a light bag for daytime; the suite stores the rest.
• Health and altitude: medical staff are on board, and a medical room is standard. Tell the crew about any medication or allergies at boarding. On high-altitude legs, take it easy the first day and hydrate.
• Onboard etiquette: smoking only in the designated area; keep quiet hours overnight; KTV and mahjong rooms are reserved by time slot.
• Documents: your passport and the e-contract reference; travel insurance is included or advised depending on the route.
• Booking: book only through authorized agencies, never resale channels. Deposits lock a berth; final balance is typically due 30 to 45 days before departure.
