Solo is normal here
A common surprise for first-time guests: roughly one in four bookings on the flagship trains is a solo traveller. Every cabin on every train in the fleet can be sold as a single, with an explicit single-supplement figure (not a hidden upcharge). Below is how the four common solo scenarios work in practice.
The four solo patterns
Silk Road Express
Thirty-eight private suites, eleven to twenty-two square metres. Solo guests book a whole suite and the cabin is theirs from check-in to arrival. The supplement is quoted at booking, not on board.
Jinxiu Tianfu
Single supplement is 8,000 RMB on both the 2026 and 2027 Jinxiu Tianfu departures, in either JinTa (suite) or JinWo (berth) class. A single guest occupies the cabin alone, not shared.
White Cloud Express Yunnan
The White Cloud Express southwest line runs a 3-berth cabin at 59,880 RMB against the 4-berth at 49,880. Solo guests who prefer not to pay a supplement can choose the 3-berth and share with up to two others of the same gender.
Lindou Express
The Lindou winter forest train carries a library car and runs north to Mohe and the Arctic Village. Solo guests book it precisely for the quiet; the route attracts a higher solo share than the summer trains.
How the single supplement works
On trains that sell cabins by berth (White Cloud Express Yunnan 4-berth, Jinxiu Tianfu JinWo on the 13-day short version, and others) a solo guest can either pay the supplement to take the whole cabin, or accept a same-gender share in a 3-berth or 4-berth. The supplement figure is published per departure on each train page; on the flagship 16-day Jinxiu Tianfu and the 18-day White Cloud Express 2027 it is 8,000 RMB.
Practical notes for solo travellers
- English-speaking curator on board. All eleven trains carry a bilingual host team; solo English-speaking guests are not left to navigate transfers alone.
- Boarding is mostly single-city. Each train page lists its boarding points; the flagship routes board from one main station, which removes the awkward logistics of solo transfers.
- Dining is shared. Solo guests dine at two-seat tables; the dining car is the easiest place to meet the rest of the carriage.
- Visa and insurance. China visa support is included for every booking; international travel insurance is required and can be added at checkout.
