Yunnan stretches from the tropical south to the Tibetan plateau in the northwest, a province of minority cultures, karst lakes and snow mountains. The White Cloud Express southwest line is built for exactly this arc, gliding from Guangzhou up through Kunming, Baoshan and Tengchong to Lijiang and Shangri-La, then back, a single comfortable loop through the most beautiful corners of the south.
Highlights
Kunming
The 'Spring City', gateway to the Stone Forest and a gentle start with flower markets and the Yunnan Provincial Museum.
Dali
An old Bai town on the shores of Erhai lake, with the Three Pagodas and a slow lakeside rhythm.
Lijiang
A UNESCO old town beneath the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with Naxi culture and the lift to the glacier park.
Shangri-La
The Tibetan edge of Yunnan: the Songzanlin monastery, Pudacuo national park and high meadows at 3,200 metres.
Tengchong
Hot springs, dormant volcanoes and the wartime Burma Road history, a quieter stop on the northern arc.
Xishuangbanna
The tropical far south: Dai villages, rainforest and night markets, reached on extended editions of the line.
The trains that reach Yunnan
Yunnan is served by the White Cloud Express southwest line, the train's first route from September 2026. It boards in Guangzhou and runs a single loop through Chongzuo, Kunming, Baoshan, Tengchong, Lijiang and Shangri-La, with two cabin tiers (a four-berth and a three-bgerth) and an upgraded, hotel-style boarding option.
White Cloud Express
The southwest Yunnan line through Kunming, Tengchong, Lijiang and Shangri-La, boarding from Guangzhou.
Best time to go
October to April is the dry season: warm days, cool nights and the clearest light on the snow mountains. Avoid the June-September monsoon, when mountain roads can be washed out and clouds hide the peaks. Spring (March-April) brings blossom in the north.
Practical notes
- The line boards in Guangzhou, not Yunnan; build in a flight or extra nights there if you are starting from elsewhere.
- Shangri-La sits at 3,200 metres; take the first day easy and use the onboard medic if you feel the altitude.
- Minority festivals (Bai, Naxi, Dai, Tibetan) run through the year; ask which coincide with your sailing.
- Two cabin tiers are offered; the upgraded boarding package adds a hotel-style night before departure.
