China's most international luxury train, designed by HBA, carries 80 guests in 38 en-suite rooms across 15 cars. Here is what a day and a night aboard actually feel like.
Boarding the Silk Road Express is closer to checking into a boutique hotel than catching a train. Car 10 houses a dedicated hotel-style boarding lobby. A butler team meets you at the door with a welcome drink, then walks you to your suite and walks through the call system and your dining preferences. You do not touch your large luggage again until the end; porters handle it, and each suite stores it for the whole journey.
Joining points depend on the route: Kashgar for the Southern Xinjiang circuit, Xining for the Qinghai-Gansu loop and the Xining-to-Dunhuang journey, and Guangzhou or Shenzhen on the shorter four-day run. Whichever you choose, expect the same welcome ceremony before the wheels turn.
All 38 suites are en-suite and come with a 270-degree panoramic window, a feature few rail journeys anywhere can match. Rooms divide into four types:
The amenity tray is genuinely luxury-grade: Dyson hair dryers, BVLGARI, Aesop and Marvis toiletries, THG Paris bathroom fixtures, Serta bedding and a Dometic minibar fridge in every room. Beds are firm Chinese-hotel standard with nightly turndown; ask and a softer topper is arranged.
Two dining cars run in parallel. The Xihai Commandery serves Western cuisine; the Sheng Yan Ge serves Chinese. Both are Michelin-grade, the menu rotates as the landscape changes and rarely repeats, and the table setting is a small museum: century-old British silver, Jingdezhen porcelain, Alain Saint-Joani French cutlery and Nachtmann German glassware. Breakfast spans congee and eggs Benedict; dinner is the multi-course centrepiece, often themed to the region outside the window. Premium drinks are included, and dietary requirements are handled with advance notice.
The Xingxiang Palace lounge car is the heart of the train: a 270-degree panorama, a piano, and afternoon tea through the biggest windows on Chinese rails. The Han Yuefu multi-function car layers in the lighter entertainments, a KTV room, a tea room, an automatic mahjong table and a cigar bar, its walls carved with a wooden relief of Han-dynasty Chang'an and the old Silk Road map. Each suite includes one free hour of KTV and one free hour of mahjong, reserve ahead. Evenings settle into relaxed sociability rather than formality; smart casual is all the dress code dinner requires.
Five holiday ambassadors and a 24-hour butler team travel with you, alongside two photographers who shoot the journey from the ground and the air. Every suite receives one complimentary laundry service, and nightly turndown comes with fruit, nuts and milk. The train itself is a designed object: interiors by HBA, built by CRRC Sifang, with a hand-painted exterior by the Tsinghua Academy of Fine Arts in cloud-and-mountain greens and Han lacquer red.
