The New Orient Express boards in Urumqi, with an all-day arrival service: send your flight or train details ahead and a driver meets you, then a dedicated porter takes your large luggage so you only carry a small bag between stops. Beds are 1.5 m doubles in the higher tiers, with a safe, desk and wardrobe, USB charging at the bedside and independent air and light control. Panoramic windows are enlarged by 30 to 40 percent on this generation, and every car is wrapped in acoustic paneling for a quiet night.
The dining car seats 60 across two-person and four-person tables, with a professional kitchen turning out more than a hundred regional dishes that rarely repeat across a long journey, cold-water fish feasts, grilled lamb, hand-pulled noodles and a rotating menu that follows the province outside. Low-oil and low-salt versions are standard for older guests and children, and breakfast always offers both Chinese and Western choices. Premium drinks are included.
The bar car is the social centre, coffee, a piano and KTV through the evening. A separate entertainment car adds a mini stage, game and chess tables and a drinks bar, and regularly hosts folk performances, intangible-heritage craft sessions and themed parties. There is a dedicated smoking room, and the whole train carries 5G and Wi-Fi 6, so the gaps in the Taklamakan are shorter than you would expect.
Each car has its own attendant, and a medical officer travels with the train, with first-aid kits and a wheelchair on board and crew trained in Red Cross first response. The riding itself is the quiet selling point: sealed folding gangways and close-coupled couplers keep out the desert dust and smooth out the tracks, so nights in motion feel closer to a hotel than a railway.
