The White Cloud Express is the south's grand land-cruise: an 18-day loop that carries you from Guangzhou all the way around Xinjiang and back, with two distinct 2027 editions and a full private en-suite fleet.
The 2027 White Cloud Express boards at Guangzhou Baiyun Station, one of the largest integrated rail hubs in Asia, where high-speed, intercity and metro lines meet under a single roof, so an international arrival is one station and one transfer rather than a cross-city taxi. It is the only station in Guangzhou that now dispatches tourist charter trains. Segmented boarding is available at Chongqing and Lanzhou if you would rather join the train further west. From there the train runs north to Chongqing, then west to Urumqi and the full Xinjiang circuit before returning to Guangzhou.
The season runs as two curated products:
Both follow the 18-day arc: Guangzhou - Chongqing - Urumqi - Altay / Ili (Route A or B) - Kashgar - Korla - Golmud - Guangzhou. Altay and Ili use alternative routings (Route A/B, with a small supplement on some), so the landscapes shift with the edition.
Every cabin carries a private en-suite bathroom, so the train reads as a moving hotel rather than a sleeper. Cabins are configured for twin-to-double flexibility, and a single-supplement option is available for solo travellers.
Both editions run on 25K-type stock rather than the older 25G bodies several other Chinese luxury trains were rebuilt from, with air-spring suspension and a 7 mm coupling gap. Eighteen carriages carry 92 guests in 46 rooms: twelve sleeping cars with private bathrooms, two of them three-cabin cars and ten of them four-cabin cars, plus a kitchen car, a restaurant car, the reception lobby, an observation car, a generator car and a crew dormitory. The four public spaces follow the ceremonial order of a Hunanese academy: 云聚 Yunju for arrival, 云宴 Yunyan for dining, 云赏 Yunshang for viewing, 云栖 Yunqi for sleeping.
The dining cars blend Cantonese refinement with the flavours of each region the train crosses - Sichuan, Xinjiang and Yunnan influences appear as the route turns south. Premium drinks are included and dietary notes are confirmed at boarding.
A lounge and sightseeing areas carry the evening, with themed programming and quiet corners for the long hauls. The train carries Wi-Fi, and the 18-day format builds in hotel nights between rail segments as natural rest days.
Each car has its own attendant, and service runs at roughly one crew member for every two guests. Comprehensive travel insurance is included in the package, up to RMB 800,000 of cover, reduced by law for guests over 75. The train was specified around older travellers: non-slip flooring throughout, an emergency call system in every cabin, wide step-free corridors, sound-insulated sleeping cars, and menus planned around nutrition as well as flavour. A medical officer travels with every departure, carrying altitude and chronic-condition supplies for the Pamir stretch. Travellers over 70 need a medical report issued within the previous six months plus a signed health acknowledgement, and those over 75 travel with a family member. Sealed gangways and close-coupled coaches keep the ride quiet through the Taklamakan and the mountain passes.
