The Beautiful Sky Road boards on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway - typically around Xining, the gateway to the plateau - with an all-day arrival service. The train is timed so the climb to Lhasa is gradual, giving your body time to adjust.
Two panoramic observation cars carry floor-to-ceiling windows, and pulse oxygen is available at every berth, so the ascent is comfortable rather than merely endured. Tibetan design runs through the carriages, making the journey an introduction to the culture it travels toward.
