China's winter forest luxury train pairs the silence of the Greater Khingan with a warm, book-lined interior. Here is what a journey from Harbin toward Mohe and the aurora belt is actually like.
The Lindou Express boards in Harbin, the ice city, where an all-day arrival service meets your flight or train, takes your large luggage, and walks you to your cabin. From there the train turns north through the forest capital of Yichun and on toward Mohe, the northernmost point of China and one of the few places in the country where the aurora borealis can be seen. Winter is the season, roughly December through March, when the forests are snow-laden and the nights are long and clear.
The Lindou Express is built as a quiet, warm retreat on rails. The standout is a forest library and book bar (书屋) - a calm carriage of shelves, reading nooks and a coffee bar that has become the train's signature space. A separate lounge and a multi-function car host folk music, craft sessions and themed evenings, while the bar car (酒吧车) is the social centre after dinner.
