Chinese travel reviewers itemise everything, and the fare of a luxury train invites an audit. We collected the arithmetic guests actually publish, from budget-tier breakdowns to five-figure suite justifications. Compiled and translated from first-hand reviews, 2025-2026.

A five-figure train fare attracts two kinds of review: the dazzled and the accountant. The accountant reviews are the useful ones. They compare the fare against the trip it replaces, line by line, and their conclusions are more varied, and more interesting, than any brochure.
Two sisters from Jiangsu, aged 58 and 55, compared the country's headline train products before choosing. The elder had already driven across Xinjiang once: twenty days, about 60,000 yuan per person once fuel, lodging, meals and her time were counted, with several eight-hour driving days. The train equivalent came in around half that, moved at night, and did not require anyone to drive. She also noticed the thing road-trippers do not expect: "we never once repacked the bags to change hotels. The hotel came with us."
Her younger sister, asked whether the fare bothered her, gave the answer that recurs in one form or another across every premium product: "If the product is good, price is not the problem." Not every reviewer agrees.
At the other end of the market, guests on the value tier of the Panda family, a train with more than 300 berths that we list for completeness rather than as one of our luxury recommendations, publish full reconstructions. One guest who paid a little over 10,000 yuan for sixteen days enumerated what it covered: seven nights aboard, eight nights in ground hotels, all coaches, first-entry tickets across the highlights, every meal, guides, a riding butler, and a doctor. His counterfactual: building the same itinerary independently would cost more than the fare in lodging and transport alone.
The same review is honest about the trade: aboard the value tier, meals are tray service, rooms are compact berths, and showers are shared down the corridor. His verdict, which matches the pattern across this tier: "the ground programme is where the money shows. Onboard, you are paying for the itinerary, not the linens." Travellers who want the linens move up a tier, and the reviewers say so plainly.
The premium reviews do the same audit from the top. A guest on a top-tier Song-design train totalled his fare, near 80,000 yuan, against three nights in named luxury hotels alone, a St. Regis, an InterContinental, a Conrad, and found the hotels a five-figure sum by themselves. Another reviewer on a flagship Xinjiang circuit wrote that the fare looked steep until itemised: "counted properly, it is not outrageous." The items guests keep counting are consistent: full-board dining that reviews treat as a genuine restaurant, ground five-stars, private coach fleets, guides, onboard medicine, laundry, photography, and the overnight mileage that buys back daylight.

Honest reviewers flag what no fare buys back. Flights to the start city sit outside every fare we read. Optional excursions, helicopter flights, paragliding, are extra on some products. And the currency that matters most on a long circuit is energy: reviewers in their seventies did fine, but a seventy-eight-year-old who spent her trip doing helicopter runs over the grasslands is not the median guest, and the median reviews say the pace is real. One reviewer's formula: judge the fare against what it replaces, then judge the itinerary against your own energy.

Read enough of these audits and the conclusion stops being about money. Reviewers at every tier end in the same place: the fare is defensible when the itinerary matches the traveller, and indefensible when it does not. A couple who hate coach hours and love slow mornings will call a sixteen-day circuit cheap at twice the price. An attraction-collector on the same berths will call it a scam in the same words.
