The Silk Road Express is the train other Chinese luxury trains get compared to: thirty-eight suites, no more than eighty guests, two dining cars, and a panoramic lounge car wrapped in windows. It is also the most written-about. The review that anchors this page is a first-person account the author titled, plainly, "On the train, I saw a different Silk Road." He opened with the question every reader asks first.

His reasons were practical, and reviewers keep echoing both. First: he does not drive. China's northwest puts its headline sights hundreds of kilometres apart, and the alternatives are a self-drive odyssey or a coach tour that changes hotels every night. Second: he brought his elderly mother. Without the vacation butler who steadied her on and off the train, the dedicated boarding channels and the ground transfers, he writes, he would never have attempted the trip at all.
His conclusion, which he puts at the centre of the review rather than the end: the train's real product is not the suite or the dining car. It is turning people who could not otherwise reach the northwest, non-drivers, travellers with elderly parents, families with small children, into people who can.
His routing ran south through Xinjiang: west from Xining to Ruoqiang, on to Luntai, ending in Kashgar. At Ruoqiang the train swapped for coaches and the group reached the ruins of the ancient Milan kingdom, with the fabled closed city of Loulan a hundred kilometres beyond, and an unexpectedly good Loulan museum in town. At Luntai they boarded a private miniature train through the poplar forest, the same town Lu You pinned into a Song-dynasty poem. In Kashgar he found the old city restored but alive, hotels opening one after another, and a Uyghur child chatting with him in Mandarin.

The details guests keep repeating form a consistent picture. The 270-degree lounge car faces Qinghai Lake, the Qilian mountains and the open Gobi in turn, its interior hung with a different jade carving in every car, what one guest called a small mobile museum. Daytime brings Tibetan culture classes where guests learn to shape tsampa with their hands; after dinner the crew changes into ethnic dress and performs. And then there is the photographer: the reviewer's was nearly two metres tall, followed guests on and off the train all day, and delivered retouched photos the same evening, in time for social media.
Dining earns its own superlatives. A verified guest review on Dianping, on a Dunhuang-to-Xining departure, thanked her butler and vacation ambassadors by name and called the food "better than I could imagine, refined and delicious at once." Guests also single out the staggered entry times at sites, which meant no long queues, and guides who knew the ground. The press journey that drew the most attention, a four-day run with eight artists and musicians aboard, praised the antique silver on the dinner tables, French custom flatware beside seventeenth-to-twentieth-century pieces, and a piano set that turned the lounge into a concert hall after dark.
When the train carried a film director and a columnist among its guests, both reached for the same idea: the interior and the window refuse to match, and that is the point.
"Boarding felt theatrical. Nothing about the colours or the decor says train. Then you see the landscape flick past outside, and the contrast is stunning."
