Until this year, every one of China’s high-end tourist trains departed from the north and west — Chengdu, Urumqi, Xining, Hailar. The White Cloud Express (南方列车·白云号) changes the map: the first high-end cultural tourism train from the Greater Bay Area, departing Guangzhou and themed entirely around southern Chinese design. It carries 92 guests in 46 cabins across eighteen cars, every one of them named in a “cloud” (云) sequence.
Naming first, since the train is new enough that sources disagree: the Chinese name is Baiyun (白云, white cloud), and it operates as part of the “Southern Trains” (南方列车) family. English coverage uses both Baiyun Express and White Cloud Express; we have standardised on the latter for readability. They are the same train.
The design — a bookish take on southern China
Where the Panda fleet leans on panda IP and the Jinxiu Tianfu builds Song-dynasty aesthetics, the White Cloud’s language is “scholarly Chinese interiors” — the operator calls it the country’s first quality tourism train built around the literati home. The stated theme, “One carriage, one theme; one space, one mood” (一车厢一主题,一空间一意境), draws on Lingnan window lattice, Guangzhou arcade architecture (骑楼) and other regional motifs. The slogan that frames the routes: “One line through south and north; reading old and new as you travel” (一线穿南北,漫行阅古今).
The project is a joint venture between China Railway Guangzhou Group and Bay Area cultural-investment interests, exclusively operated by a Guangzhou-based tourism company, with the product launch held at Guangzhou Baiyun station on 25 August 2026.
Cabins — two tiers, both en-suite
- Yunqi Yayun 云栖·雅韵 (Cloud-Dwelling Elegance) — the entry VIP cabin tier. From RMB 98,880 on standard 2027 sailings.
- Yunqi Kuanjing 云栖·宽境 (Cloud-Dwelling Broad View) — the higher tier. From RMB 118,880 on standard sailings, 128,880 on the September departure.
Both tiers are VIP observation cabins with private bathrooms, smart climate control and 270° panoramic constant-temperature windows. Dining is the Yunyan Qinghuan (云宴·清欢) themed restaurant car with Michelin-trained fusion cooking; the Yunshe Guanlan (云赏·观澜) multi-function car and a welcome lounge handle culture activities and social space. Like every train at this level, it is sold as an all-inclusive package: VIP cabin, high-end hotels along the route, all dining, tickets and ground transport.
Two routes, both loops from Guangzhou
- Yunnan southwest line — Guangzhou up through Chongzuo, Kunming, Baoshan, Tengchong, Lijiang and Shangri-La and back: a single loop through the deep south. This is the train’s first route, running from September 2026, from RMB 49,880 in the four-berth tier. See our Yunnan guide.
- Xinjiang north & south loop — the train secured a September 2026 slot on the Xinjiang circuit, running the standard northern and southern highlights. See Xinjiang.
The 2027 Xinjiang season has six standard departures — 18 May, 6 Jun, 26 Jun, 16 Jul, 5 Aug, 24 Aug — from RMB 98,880 / 118,880, with a seventh on 14 September at RMB 108,880 / 128,880.
Where it sits in the market
At RMB 98,880 to 128,880, the White Cloud prices alongside Jinxiu Tianfu at the very top of the Chinese market — above the Chengdu, well above the New Orient Express entry tiers. Its differentiators are regional (the only top-tier train from southern China), cultural (the literati-interior theme rather than dynasty or panda motifs), and practical (Guangzhou boarding, which shortens the journey for anyone arriving via Hong Kong or the Bay Area’s airports).
Booking follows the standard package route — deposit, regulated e-contract, balance 30–45 days out. Our booking guide has the details, and the 2027 price comparison shows how it stacks against every other train.
