Few trains in the world span a wider price range under one name. The New Orient Express carries a second-generation fleet from RMB 16,800 and a third-generation flagship whose top suite reaches RMB 72,999. Why the gap exists is one article; this one answers the more practical question: with a given budget, what should you actually book?
Band 1 · Around RMB 17,000: the shared-berth entry
What it buys: a four-berth compartment on the second-generation fleet (13 sailings on the mixed Gold & Blue Diamond formation, Blue Diamond 4-berth from RMB 16,800), or a four-berth Platinum berth on the October south-Xinjiang editions (from RMB 16,888). Shared compartment, en-suite bathroom on the Platinum tiers, the full 14-day or south-Xinjiang itinerary around it.
Who it suits: value-driven travellers and solo guests happy to share with strangers for the sake of the route; groups of four who can fill a compartment and keep it private. Book when: these are the fares that move first; treat six months ahead as the practical floor for summer sailings.
Band 2 · RMB 21,000–28,000: your own compartment
What it buys: the step most couples and pairs should look at first. Blue Diamond 2-berth from RMB 20,800 on the second generation; on the third generation, the Platinum Gold Diamond entry tier from RMB 26,888 in spring, 27,888 in summer, and 21,888 on the late-summer and October sailings. Read the small print here: the Platinum Gold Diamond fare is per berth in a four-berth compartment with upper and lower bunks, the only multi-berth tier on the new fleet. The upper bunks fold away and lock by default, so the compartment works as a twin unless all four berths are booked; a family filling it pays the reduced third-berth rate for each extra member. Take all four berths as a private twin compartment and it starts at RMB 37,888 in high season; on the 20 August North Xinjiang short route and the October southern sailings a reduced third berth starts at RMB 16,888. The second generation also fields an independent Blue Diamond formation with whole compartments from RMB 24,800 (four-berth) or 28,800 (two-berth). Every tier on the third generation, including this one, has a private en-suite wet-and-dry bathroom.
Who it suits: couples who want privacy without the suite premium, and value-minded travellers who can sail in spring or late season: the same Platinum cabin moves by more than RMB 5,000 between April and August. Book when: spring Platinum berths are the first to sell inside the third-generation allocation; nine to twelve months ahead is realistic for the best months.
Band 3 · RMB 33,800–38,888: the king-bed compromise
What it buys: a genuine double bed with room to move. On the second generation, the Gold Diamond king from RMB 33,800. On the third generation, the same budget keeps a Platinum compartment private as a twin at 37,888–38,888 in summer and autumn — bunks rather than a king bed, as explained under Band 2, but with the refreshed public rooms, butlers and family-connecting layouts. This is the band where the fleet generation matters most.
Who it suits: couples celebrating something specific who want a real bed but not a suite budget, and parents weighing a connecting-room layout. Book when: twelve months for summer; this band has the fewest cabins per train, so it sells out fastest per berth.
Band 4 · RMB 58,999–72,999: the Snow Lotus suites
What it buys: the top of the third generation. Imperial Gold Diamond suites (about 8 m², four suites per carriage, RMB 58,999 spring to 66,999 autumn) and Supreme Gold Diamond (about 12 m², a double sofa, three suites per carriage, 65,999 to 72,999). Both share the same wet-and-dry en-suite standard; the Supreme adds floorspace and the quietest position on the train.
Who it suits: honeymooners, anniversary trips, and travellers for whom the suite is part of the point. Book when: these sold out a season ahead even before the third generation launched; twelve months is not conservative. The RMB 8,000 single supplement also applies at this end.
Two rules that cut across every band
- · Season moves price more than tier: the Platinum cabin spans 21,888 to 38,888 across the year, a wider spread than the gap between some tiers. If the budget is tight, move the season before moving the cabin; start from the 2027 calendar.
- · Confirm the written breakdown: the name covers three fleets and several sub-types; deposits are held against specific train groups and cabin full names. Our quote-reading guide walks through what to check before paying.

Fares are per person in RMB on official 2027 releases and channel summaries, twin-share unless noted; the second-generation figures cover the mixed Gold & Blue Diamond formation (13 sailings, 10 May to 27 October), with the independent Blue Diamond formation from RMB 24,800. Prices vary by season and departure; confirm with the operator before booking. China Expresses is a booking partner for the New Orient Express.
